Is a cargo bike with 2 or 3 wheels best for you?

The first thing you should ask yourself when buying a cargo bike is whether you want a 2 wheel cargo bike or a 3 wheel cargo bike. 2 wheel cargo bikes are light and agile and very suitable for riding in cities and also for longer distances. They are about as wide as the steering wheel and therefore not wider than a normal bike. The slightly wider 3 wheel cargo bikes offer more stability and space and are therefore very suitable for transporting 2 or more children. Both variants are available both with and without pedal assistance.

Road holding/stability

2 wheel cargo bike

  • Normal road performance, also in curves
  • Dynamic and agile rides, also with additional load or children in the box
  • Keep your own balance
Just like with a normal bike, your ride gets wobbly when driving slowly.
  • Larger turning circle (due to the deep centre of gravity with the box between the wheels)

3 wheel cargo bike

  • Different road performance, without shifting weight in curves with your body. Avoiding road unevenness is more difficult and a cargo bike tricycle ride can be bumpier. Don’t ride too fast in curves and keep the weight balance in mind. Avoid traffic calming measures and kerbs.
  • Rides simply and relaxed
  • Stays upright on its own, also no balancing problems when driving slowly. You can stay seated at traffic lights and yet remain stable.
  • Larger turning circle than a normal bike, but smaller than with a 2 wheel cargo bike

Box/Loading capacity

2 wheel cargo bike

  • Standardly comes with 1 bench
  • Extendable with 3 – 4 seats with the additional bench
  • Capacity up to 80 kilos

3 wheel cargo bike

  • Standardly comes with 2 benches
  • Room for 4 children and groceries, toys and other things
  • Capacity up to 100 kilos

Stand/Parking brake

2 wheel cargo bike

  • Stable two-legged stand that securely carries the entire weight (with additional load)
  • Doesn’t roll away when parked

3 wheel cargo bike

  • Parking brake/locking brake against rolling away (easy to operate with the left hand brake)
  • No stand, as it’s stable because of the three wheels
