Up to which age is the cargo bike suitable

Children just love cargo bikes. You too perhaps, because you don't want to see yourself wobbling along with 2 or three kids on a normal bike. That's maybe why you're thinking about purchasing a cargo bike. After all, a cargo bike makes your daily life easier and more fun. But your kids are naturally going to get bigger and bigger. Is such a big outlay worthwhile when your oldest reaches 5 years of age? So up to what age is a cargo bike suitable?

Naturally, you begin at an early age. You can carry a baby from as young as 3 months in a cargo bike using a Maxi-Cosi holder or a baby seat. After 8 or 9 months, it's time to change this seat in your cargo bike. The wee one can then be carried in a toddler seat. The toddler seat is then swapped for a little-kid seat at around 18 months. Then, when they're 2 to 2.5 years old, you can put a cushion in your cargo bike. So the little one can still ride comfortably.

And then comes the moment that the children really grow up. After the age of 6 years or so, children can perhaps think it rather boring going out with Mum or Dad in the cargo bike. At that age, often children have learned to ride and want to get around on their own bike. Sometimes it's still quite handy to sit them in the box, simply because it's quicker. And of course you still can!

In principle, your children can take a place in the cargo bike up to any age. And not only your children. Also your partner, brother, mother, neighbour, your name it. So long as you respect the maximum weight the box can bear. This is 80kg for a two-wheel cargo bike and 100kg for a three-wheeler. So if there're multiple children and you want to take your oldest as well? Then take the total weight of the children and determine whether this is possible.

Take into account the height of your child, as this could be a problem if there's a rain tent mounted on your cargo bike. In that case, children between 6 and 8 years can perhaps be too old to fit in a cargo bike.  At that age, they can be too tall to sit up straight under the rain tent. But you can transport your kids for many years if you ride without a rain tent.

In short, there are no hard and fast rules up to which age your kids fit in the cargo bike. As long as you take into account the rain tent and the load-bearing weight of the box: 80kg for a two-wheeler and 100kg for a three-wheeler. You can therefore feel free to transport 'older' children in the cargo bike.
